September & October Newsletter

11th Grade-Class of 2018

Program Information: Ms. Hoffman has taken on the role has mentor2.0 teacher
for the 11th grade matches. Class is held on Friday’s during class time. Events con-
tinue to meet once a month on a Wednesday evening. Ms. White helps with the after
school events!
Highlights: This is the inaugural group of mentees and mentors for the mentor2.0
at Brashear High School. Over the past 3 years matches have developed strong
relationships and are planning the mentees future together. 11th grade curriculum
really focuses on the mentees future and what it will look like.
Messages: The months of September and October mentees were reconnecting
with their mentors in their weekly messages. Mentees wrote a reflection to their
mentor about what they are most looking forward to this year, created accounts on
the following resources: Big Future, Khan Academy, and College Raptor, ( all post-
secondary option resources). analyzed a story to determine how differences can be
used to positively impact learning and relationships.
Event #1: Matches met for the first time this academic year. Matches indulged in
one of the highlight meals-Moes! Matches reconnected and updated each other on
what’s been happening since they last met in May. Matches built a mentor and
mentee community using a road map of important milestones during their 11th grade
year, and identified and discussed goals for this year. Lastly mentors expressed
last year that mentee open up more when there is free time ( i.e. playing basketball
outside) so matches had the opportunity for some free time.
Match Numbers: As of the first Event there are currently 57 matches participating
in the mentor2.0 program.
Upcoming Dates: The November 11th Grade Event date is Wednesday, November
2nd.

10th Grade-Class of 2019

Program Information: Ms. Hoffman continues in the role has mentor2.0 teacher for
the 10th grade matches. Program is held on Friday’s during class time. Events con-
tinue to meet once a month on a Wednesday evening.
Highlights: Students continue to be very excited about the program. Many students
were surprised that their same mentor came back for year 2!
Messages: The months of September and October mentees were spent reconnect-
ing with their mentors in their weekly messages. Mentees shared about their summer
vacation, diagramed the challenges they experienced in 9th grade and created solu-
tions to address them in 10th grade, completed a growth mindset self-assessment
and share reflections with their mentors , reflected on what they learned through the
self-assessment process, identified ways that they and their mentor can improve as
a pair over this next year, and examined and understand the SMART goal frame-
work.
Event #1: Matches met for the first time this academic year. Matches indulged in
one of the highlight meals-Moes! Matches reconnected and updated each other on
what’s been happening since they last met in May. Matches used a road map of im-
portant milestones during their 10th grade year, and identified and discussed goals
for this year. Lastly matches had fun creating a tangram house. Once they put the
pieces together for the tangram house they wrote advice to the new 9th grade
matches. The tangram houses will be put up at the first 9th grade event!
Match Numbers: As of the first Event there are 55 10th grade matches participat-
ing in the mentor2.0 program. We will continue to match new students throughout
the year.
Upcoming Dates: The November 10th Grade Event date is Wednesday, Novem-
ber 16th.

9th Grade-Class of 2020

Program Information: Mr. Pierce has taken on the role as new 9th grade men-
tor2.0 teacher for the 9th grade matches. Class is held on Wednesday’s during
class time. Events will meet once a month on a Tuesday evening.
Highlights: There was a lot of anxiousness and excitement for the first event and
engagement for the program!
Messages: During the months of September and October mentees learned about
mentor2.0 and their mentors. Their weekly messages surrounded lessons such
as : defining what a mentor is, articulating the goals and purpose of the program,
completing mentee application, creating an “I Am From” poem that identified and
described where they came from, created and analyzed an “I Am” poster that iden-
tifies and describes key qualities that they currently exhibit, and analyzed a story to
determine how cultural worldview, assumptions, and communication errors impact
our interactions with other people.
Event #1: The first Event was a hit. The matches enjoyed eating Moe’s for din-
ner. They engaged in a getting to know you activity. Then matches competed
against one another in “Human Bingo.” Lastly matches completed a “Pair Commit-
ment Sheet” and discussed what each of the commitments meant to each person
and why they might be important in the relationship building process.
Match Numbers: As of the first Event there are 46 9th grade matches participat-
ing in the mentor2.0 program. We will continue to match throughout the year.
Upcoming Dates: The November 9th grade Event date is Tuesday, November
29th.
